Cyclist dies in tragic crash near Doncaster (8/9/11)
The death of young cyclist on a country road which has seen several fatal accidents is today being investigated by traffic police.
Officers are trying to piece together how an off-road vehicle driven by a pensioner ran into the back of the bicycle on Stripe Road, near Tickhill, just after dusk on Thursday.
The dead rider has been named locally as Adam ‘Totty’ Thompson, aged 23, who lived in the Station Road area of Bawtry.
It is believed he was riding back towards Bawtry when the fatal collision occurred, near to the junction with High Common Lane.
At that point the road between Rossington and Tickhill Spital is subject to the national 60mph speed limit. The junction was the scene of a fatal motorcycle accident a few years ago.
A scooter rider was also killed on the same road near Rossington about five years ago.
Road signs on Stripe Road warn drivers to be cautious on the winding road by listing the number of serious and fatal accidents since 2000.
Police say a silver Land Rover Freelander and a silver Carrera pedal bike were both travelling from Rossington towards Tickhill on Stripe Road just after 8.05pm on Thursday when the latest fatality occurred.
“As the two vehicles approached the junction with High Common Lane, the Freelander collided with the rear wheel of the pedal cycle,” said a spokesman for South Yorkshire Police.
“The rider became unseated and struck the Freelander, coming to rest on the road.
“The pedal cyclist, a 23-year-old Bawtry man, sustained fatal head injuries from the collision.”
It has not been revealed if the cycle had any lights on or if Mr Thompson was wearing a crash helmet.
The driver of the Freelander, an 85-year-old local man, was not injured and police say he has not been arrested.
The spokesman added: “The cause of the collision is unknown at this time.
“Officers are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident and for information about the movements of both vehicles prior to the collision.”
The road was shut for several hours on Thursday evening as collision investigators recorded evidence from the scene.
Anyone with information is urged to call South Yorkshire Police on 0114 220 2020 quoting incident number 1023 of Thursday, September 8.
Stripe Road has recently been re-surfaced for much of its length and was closed for several weeks earlier this summer.
